With Mother’s day coming up this Sunday, May 14, I have been thinking about my relationship with my mom.

I can picture myself or my brother saying something like this to our mother. The mere fact that we survived childhood surely is an indication that our mom was a patient, loving, good Christian woman.

Very seriously, my brother and I were blessed to have great parents. They weren’t perfect but who among us is? We knew we were loved, and they always did their best for us.

Like many young people who are blessed to grow up in a good home with parents who sacrificed out of their love for their children, I had moments in my rebellious teens when I was very critical of my parents. Their love, like God’s remained unwavering.

Over the years my understanding of my parents’ love for me and all they have done for me increased. It is easy for me to obey the commandment to honor my mother and father because I know they deserve it.

However, God has not told us to only honor our parents if we think they deserve it. God didn’t put a condition on honoring or loving our parents. Good or bad, we are still called to honor them. So, perhaps in those relationships between parent and child, we learn something of how challenging it is at times to honor unconditionally, and even more so to love unconditionally. Perhaps we even gain a deeper appreciation of God’s unconditional love for us.

Happy Mother’s Day!
In His Love,
